Wild Spirit Community Residency Application

Your Invitation:

Are you spiritually hungry?

Are you culturally curious?

Are you disenchanted with religion?

Do you desire something deeper?

Do you long for community?

Do you seek clarity and purpose?

Do you hope for greater peace in a fractured world?

The vision of Wild Spirit Community began more than fifty years ago with an experience in Christian living. A gathering of like-minded people desired to create an alternative way of life grounded in practices of transformative faith, extravagant hospitality and compassionate service. Through a group called Faith at Works, and an experimental community called Church of the Savior, they began meeting to consider what it would be like to resist the siloed and lonely existence of our culture and connect with common purpose.

Though I was too young to participate fully at time, the imagination of faith-based community life took hold and never let me go. This is the vision of Wild Spirit Community, a gathering of the spiritually hungry who like our founders, crave greater depth and meaning, and desire to become our best humans for our own sake and that of the world.

The original community included dentists and therapists and Montessori teachers and justice makers and peacekeepers from all walks of life. They developed a soup kitchen and safe space called The Gathering Place in the heart of a state capital, with community meeting space and a small library where all were welcome to sit for a while, read or contemplate life. They served up a simple lunch of soup, bread and salad for the poorest of the poor as well as state senators.

Others among them bought the big house together, a multi-storied home in a quiet neighborhood. Each participant owned their own private space, from an entire floor for a family with children, to an accessible, single room with bath for a woman with disabilities. The first floor welcomed myriad guests to community space, where evening conversations, regular faith practices and cooking responsibilities in the house kitchen were shared. The basement had a room for whomever needed shelter, from the teen kicked out of their home, to others in transition who needed a safe space to re-set, move forward and thrive.
